Early Wednesday, June 22, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan
The quake hit 28 miles southwest of the provincial capital of Khost, in Paktika province, an area where poverty is widespread
Afghan officials say 1,000 people have been killed and another 1,500 injured. The death toll is likely to rise in the next few days.
Nearly 2,000 homes were destroyed and thousands have been displaced.
Search-and-rescue efforts are underway but wind and heavy rain are preventing helicopters from landing and making headway
