Based on a true story, Captain Robert Smalls escaped slavery by hijacking a confederate naval ship. Sailed his family and other families north, past 3 different confederate stopping posts, to the Union army. He met with President Lincoln and recruited thousands of black people to join forces with the Union army. He was named Captain and was the first black naval Captain in America fighting in the civil war.
