ASH recognized Ami Bhatt, MD, PhD, of Stanford Medicine, with the 2024 William Dameshek Prize for her groundbreaking contributions to the field of genomics and microbiomics. Dr. Bhatt's pioneering research has transformed the understanding of the microbiome and its role in improving outcomes for various human diseases.
Her work has advanced the clinical application of microbiomics, including studying the effects of gut decontamination on transplant outcomes and co-leading research on graft-versus-host disease prophylaxis strategies. Dr. Bhatt’s research has linked bloodstream infections and outcomes in transplant patients to gut microbiome characteristics and identified connections between prolonged gastrointestinal SARS-CoV-2 viral shedding and symptoms.
Through her unique, collaborative approach, Dr. Bhatt has expanded the boundaries of biomedical knowledge, including uncovering microbial enzymes that hold potential for gene therapy applications. Her innovative discoveries continue to impact both hematology and broader fields of medicine.
