Australia: Revellers set new record dancing to Nutbush at Birdsville's Big Red Bash.
More than 4,000 people danced to Tina Turner’s 1973 hit "Nutbush City Limits" breaking a new “Nutbush” world record in Queensland, Australia.
From school discos, to country balls and DJ sets, the 'Nutbush' is Australia's unofficial national dance.
Now, a lifetime of training has paid off for 4000 boot scooters, who broke a world record in outback Queensland.
Thousands of Australians kicked up the red dust of outback Queensland as they set a new world record for the Largest Nutbush City Limits Dance.
More than 4000 music fans attending the Birdsville Big Red Bash spread out in formation across the Simpson Desert plains - many wearing wigs and tutus - to dance and raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service on Thursday.
The largest sand dune in the Simpson Desert formed the backdrop as Tina Turner’s 1973 classic blared through the speakers and the dancers raised more than $60,000.
They also broke the world record for Largest Nutbush City Limits Dance, stealing the title from ... themselves.
The iconic Aussie music festival has been the scene of world-record breaking performances every year since 2018.
The dusty dancing tradition has become a staple event as part of the Birdsville Big Red Bash music festival, which this year drew a crowd of about 11,000 people.
This year’s Nutbush dance funds will be donated to the festival’s charity partner the Royal Flying Doctor Service - an important lifeline for the region.
Patients in “the middle of nowhere” often require RFDS assistance to be flown to major hospitals for specialist treatment.
The service has already been employed twice by the festival during this year’s event, once for a patient with a broken arm and once for a patient who sustained a possible spinal injury tumbling down the 40m-high sand dune.
Dancers this year paid $15 to take part, adding $61,260 to the festival’s RFDS fundraising total of $435,000 since 2016.
Festival owner and Outback Music Festival Group managing director Greg Donovan spoke to 7NEWS.com.au from the desert plains, accidently swallowing a fly while sharing the origins of the record-breaking tradition.
Donovan said he looked through a long list of possible records to break before settling on the iconic Nutbush.
“We were looking for something we could do to, one: help raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, but two: engage a lot of people in the activity and have fun with something that was easy,” Donovan said.
“Its quite an iconic song, and everybody loves doing the Nutbush dance. I thought, let’s give it a go!”
The world record is officially recognised, though it isn’t listed with the Book of Guinness World Records. The festival instead chose to support local via Australian record certification company The Australian Book of Records.
Donovan isn’t sure if Tina Turner is aware of the world record, but says “maybe we should get Tina out to the Bash next year”.
“We had one of our singers dressed up as Tina Turner one year, and we had a band that did it live,” Donovan said.
“But imagine having Tina Turner here, we’d have 10,000 people doing the Nutbush ... I reckon we should get onto that.”
Its estimated the event, which this year also includes a doggy fashion contest, usually rakes in about $15 million of economic benefit to the region.
The crowd is especially impressive since the outback town of Birdsville is usually home to a population of just 150 people.
Festivalgoers swinging past the town’s local bakery have been recorded stocking up on 1,500 curried camel pies daily.
The three-day event rolled to a close on Thursday evening with live performances from Jimmy Barnes, Kasey Chambers, Ash Grunwald, and Mark Cable.
