Levels Co-Founder Casey Means, MD, explains.
⚠️ Insulin resistance
- When your glucose level rises, your pancreas releases insulin to help you get that glucose out of the bloodstream and into the cells so it can be used for energy.
- If there’s an excess of glucose already, it gets stored.
- Over time, as you spike your glucose repeatedly—which is what the average American is doing with a highly processed diet—you develop insulin resistance.
- Eventually, cells get overwhelmed and begin to ignore insulin’s signaling.
- Glucose starts rising in the bloodstream. And that extra insulin can’t push more glucose into the cells.
- That’s really the pathway toward type 2 diabetes.
