In this edition of the Center for Latinx Digital Media's Virtual Seminar Series, Prof. Diana Leon-Boys (University of South Florida) made a presentation entitled "Flexible Latinidad at Disney theme parks: A Bi-coastal situated ethnography of Elena of Avalor." The event was moderated by María Celeste Wagner, PhD candidate (University of Pennsylvania) and external graduate student affiliate of the Center.
Presentation abstract: Guided by a “modified situated ethnography” methodology that I developed, this project analyzes on site performance of Latinidad by the Elena of Avalor princesses at Disneyland and Disney World, alongside audience reactions to, and interactions with, the princess. By comparing Elena’s embodied location at the parks in relation to her digital park presence, this analysis demonstrates that the existence of the princess, and Latinidad, is flexible and varies drastically from coast to coast.
