Today I am reviewing "Business Made Simple" by Donald Miller. Subtitled "60 Days to Master Leadership, Sales, Marketing, Execution and More," it certainly has a lot packed into it.
The book is comprised of 60 daily readings to help you level up the value you bring to the workplace - whether you are an employee, team leader, or solopreneur. It covers topics ranging from "How to write a mission statement" to business finance, negotiation, sales funnels, and more.
Donald Miller and the Business Made Simple / Storybrand team have a vision to make a business school education accessible to the masses, help small businesses thrive, and grow the middle class. It's an ambitious goal to say the least, and it's something that is right up my alley.
Does this little blue book have what it takes to disrupt higher education and bring MBA-level insight to the masses?
Now, as one who actually went through the leg work of getting a Master's in Business Administration, I'd like to think I'm in a decent position to weigh the value of Business Made Simple against what I got out of my MBA. And I have to say.... It's a toss up. There are a TON of actionable and clear takeaways in Donald Miller's book that you can implement right now and every day in your business. And MBA will go deeper into specific subjects, but will you actually need that information in regular daily situations? Doubtful. But you'll be one of the few people with experience in those topics if and when the time does arise.
What does and MBA offer that you can't get from the book? An EXPERIENCE. The personal challenge, the friends I made, the places I traveled to (my program had an international component to it) - those are things that made my graduate studies totally worth it.
So it really comes down to: What do you want? Do you want easy to implement, actionable advice that will give you a leg up in your workplace? Buy the book. Do you want an experience and a place to connect with like-minded entrepreneurs and experts? Enroll in an MBA. Do you want to save as much time and money as possible? Buy the book. Do you want a credential and some letters behind your name? Get the MBA (although, the economic value of an MBA is beginning to dwindle - just a heads up).
