Bob Mayer gets behind the wheel of "America's most popular full-sized car, the Chevrolet Caprice" for this 1980s story and turns in a mixed review.
Mayer finds the 1980 Caprice little changed from the 1979 model: one hundred pounds lighter, with an improved instrument cluster and a "cavernous" trunk.
But Mayer finds the car's standard engine, a 267 V-8, "unsatisfactory:" noisy, prone to hesitation when accelerating and under-powered. Mayer recommends the bigger engine while noting that the Chevy's seats shake at highway speeds.
But given all that, Mayer reports that the Caprice is "quite nice," with a good ride and a quiet interior -- if you ignore the ticking engine and the quivering seats.
