In this video I show you how to backflip on skis.
The backflip is everyone's favourite trick to do on snow. But there are more reasons why the backflip is such an awesome trick. Backflips are usually the first time that you will go upside down on skis. Backflips help you to learn bigger tricks like rodeos and corks, which lead to even bigger tricks like double corks, and double backflips!
Before you go out to attempt your backflip on snow you need to be able to backflip very comfortably on the trampoline, tuck and no tuck. It can also help considerably if you can land a standing backflip. As for tricks on snow you just need to have good air awareness and be able to comfortably hit a medium sized jump. The tricks I would recommend before doing your backflip are 360s and 540s.
Before you attempt your backflip, I recommend trying on a water ramp or airbag if you have access to them. But they are not necessary. On the day of your backflip attempt you want to go out and build or find a steep, kicky jump that gives plenty of height and airtime. As for the landing it is best if it is powder or slush, because you don't have to land head first onto hard packed snow. But for this video I will be demonstrating it on a park jump.
After you have warmed up and become comfortable with the jump, it’s time to send it!
As you approach the lip of the jump you want to be crouched down a little ready to pop, with your head pretty level you also want to be going a little faster so that you can avoid your tips catching the knuckle as you come into land.
When you hit the tip off the take-off you want to pop but not too much as this may cause you to lose momentum. And start slightly leaning you back and head backward to set your rotation.
As you flip around you need to be patient and just keep your head back, because wherever your head goes your body will follow.
As you come round for the last part of the rotation you want to spot your landing and start swinging your knees toward your head so that you can bring your body around the last few degrees.
As your body levels out you want to straighten your legs and brace for the landing. And there you have it you just stomped your first backflip on skis!
As you get more comfortable with your backflip you can start to do them on much bigger jumps.
