Poconé was discovered by Luiz de Albuquerque de Melo Pereira e Cáceres in 1777, after gold was discovered. Its first name was Beripoconé , a name from an indigenous tribe that inhabited the region." On January 21, 1781, under orders from Luís de Albuquerque de Melo Pereira e Cáceres , Antonio José Pinto de Figueiredo created the Arraial Foundation Act. of São Pedro d'El Rey . The name Arraial de Beripoconé was not used because the gentile was considered barbarian, deriving from the gentile "dwelled in this place".
On 25 October 1831, the General Decree of the regency government created the municipality, along with its current political boundaries, of Villa de Poconé , the latter name being a modification of the original name.

bathed by the Cuiabá and Paraguai rivers, Poconé is the main access to the legendary Transpantaneira park road, the gateway to the Mato Grosso Pantanal. The dirt road, which ends in Porto Jofre (MS), is 149 kilometres long, dotted with farms, rural inns, wooden bridges - there are more than 100 - and many typical animals.

The Pantanal Complex , or simply Pantanal , is a biome [ note 1 ] consisting mainly of a steppe savannah , mostly flooded , with 250 thousand square kilometers in length and an average altitude of 100 meters . [ 1 ] Due to the difficulties of measuring the size of the Pantanal, it is possible to find references of its area in 210 thousand km². [ 2 ]
It is situated in the south of the state of Mato Grosso , which occupies 35% of the territory, and in the northwest of Mato Grosso do Sul , which occupies 65%, [ 3 ] in addition to parts of northern Paraguay and eastern Bolivia (where it is called from Bolivian Chaco ). The Pantanal is considered the largest continuous flooded plain in the world, with 140,000 km² in Brazilian territory. [ 4 ] According to the SOS Pantanal Institute, of the total of 195,000 km² considered to be the Pantanal, 151,000 km² are in Brazil and the remaining 44,000 km² are divided between Bolivia and Paraguay. [ 5 ]The Bolivian Pantanal has 31,898 km². [ 6 ]
The region considered by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage and Biosphere Reserve is located in the Pantanal National Park region . Despite the name, there is a small number of swampy areas in the Pantanal region.
