STORYLINE
Pakistani police, acting on a tip from US intelligence agents, arrested a man they said was an al-Qaida suspect believed to be linked to the 2005 London transit bombings, Pakistani security officials said on Thursday.
Zabi ul Taifi, a Saudi national, was among seven al-Qaida suspects detained in a raid near the main northwest city of Peshawar, the officials told The Associated Press.
Officials said an unmanned spy plane and three helicopters hovered over the area during the raid on a house on the outskirts of the city, which has long been a hub of militant activity.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to media.
A family living in next door to the raided house said the police stormed the neighbouring house before coming in to their own home and arresting two members of their family.
Distressed family members insisted they had had little contact with their neighbours and were unaware of the nature of their activities.
Pakistan's Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik confirmed seven people, including one foreigner, had been arrested.
He did not identify the detainees or detail their alleged crimes.
The arrests appear to be a fresh blow to al-Qaida in Pakistan, already under fire from stepped-up US missile strikes on militant targets in Pakistani regions bordering Afghanistan.
The Afghan border is home to scores of al-Qaida and Taliban militants and is believed by some to be a likely hiding place for Osama bin Laden and other extremist leaders.
