NICE, FRANCE — Death and destruction came to southern France on Thursday night after a driver massacred scores of revelers celebrating the country’s national day.
At 11 p.m. on Thursday night, a white truck reportedly drove in a zigzag pattern for almost 1.3 miles along the Promenade des Anglais in Nice.
According to Le Figaro, at least 84 people were killed and 18 wounded in the attack. The driver is said to have exited a side street and turned left, before mounting the sidewalk, where he began running people over, the New York Times reported, citing witnesses.
Unconfirmed reports say the man was firing a pistol while he was driving and ploughing through people on the crowded street. French police officers later managed to end the attack after shooting the driver to death, reported France 24.
Authorities found weapons, grenades and fake rifles inside the truck. The vehicle reportedly weighed around 19 tons.
Identity papers found at the scene indicate that the driver was a resident of Nice and held both French and Tunisian nationality, reported AFP.
French President Francois Hollande has said the country’s state of emergency will be extended for another three months. It was due to expire on July 26. He added the attack was of an “undeniable terrorist nature.”
