RAF Coningsby is also known to the TCS as the Ted HQ. It is situated in Lincolnshire which the county is also known as 'Bomber County' because of the amount of Bomber Command Squadrons that were based in the county during the Second World War.
Approximately 125,000 aircrew flew with Bomber Command during World War II (their average age was 22). 73,700 of them became casualties (killed, wounded or shot down and taken prisoner of war), of those 55,500 were killed.
Today, as ready as they were during the Second World War, RAF Coningsby is on standby 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. RAF Coningsby is a Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) station, ready to scramble in seconds.
RAF Coningsby is also Ted's home and it is home to two front-line combat ready squadrons, 29 Squadron OCU, the BBMF and as mentioned, the QRA Station of the south. The north QRA Station is at RAF Lossiemouth
RAF Coningsby opened in 1941, serving as an RAF Bomber Command station until the early 1960s. Coningsby has been a fighter station since the Phantom arrived in the late 1960s, followed by the Tornado and now the Typhoon. In 1976, Coningsby became home to the world-famous RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The station has also been home to 617 Squadron and a base for the Vulcan Bomber.
