To create a pattern chain in which the first pattern repeats before the next pattern:

0:00 have a look
0:11 watch this (first "recipe" example)
0:55 these example patterns are short
1:30 here it is again
2:24 one more time
3:05 that's it!

From the Digitakt docs:
"Chains are sequences that consist of more than one pattern. You can use chains to preselect and automate in what order you want your patterns to play."

The docs go on to explain how to create chains with one glaring exception: how to create a chain in which the first pattern is repeated 2 or more times before the 2nd pattern plays. It's simple enough to do, but not the least bit intuitive. The "recipe" for this kind of pattern chain is explained here.
