On November 12, 2024, the Internal Medicine Simulation Program at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens was invited to present a virtual seminar during the American Romanian Pulmonary Meeting, an opportunity extended by the Institutul de Pneumoftiziologie Marius Nasta in Bucharest, Romania. Our reputation for excellence in medical training prompted this invitation, and the innovative technology housed in our Simulation Lab provided a unique platform for this training initiative.
Dr. Theo Trandafirescu, who served as the moderator from Romania, played a key role in orchestrating the seminar and showcasing his expertise in pulmonary care. Meanwhile, Dr. Barry Smith, Director of the Internal Medicine Simulation Program at Queens, led a team of presenters who contributed invaluable insights from our hospital. This included Camille Matthew, MPH, RRT, who discussed indications for mechanical ventilation; Dr. Ricardo A. Lopez, who covered ventilator modes and settings; Dr. Habibur Rahman, who focused on respiratory mechanics and waveform interpretation; and Dr. Larry Sonna, who shared strategies on weaning and liberation from mechanical ventilation. Their collective knowledge highlighted our hospital’s commitment to improving patient care through simulation-based education.
Medical simulation is a contemporary approach that mirrors real-life patient care in a safe learning environment, bridging the gap between theory and practice. It empowers healthcare professionals to refine a wide array of skills, ultimately enhancing patient safety and improving health outcomes across diverse clinical scenarios.
The Simulation Center at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens plays a critical role in advancing patient-centered care through tailored educational programs. Our mission is to inspire a culture of continuous improvement and quality care by developing training that addresses system needs, applies quality improvement measures, and fosters leadership and critical thinking within our healthcare teams.
This seminar underscores our commitment to promoting effective healthcare practices and highlights how our local expertise contributes to the global medical community. By providing innovative training opportunities, we are not only enhancing our own staff’s skills but also making a lasting impact on patient care worldwide.
