I was on the beach recently, when a young friend of mine, Connor asked me: “How do you know what those 4000 switches in the cockpit do?”
There are a lot of switches in an airline cockpit. Modern airliners are ergonomically easier on the eye and also simpler to operate than the previous generation of aircraft.
In the early days of flying, many levers and switches had the same look and feel. A smooth lever or switch could represent the flaps, landing gear or speed break. A rotary switch could be anything from heating to speed, altitude or pressurisation control.
Under high workload conditions, humans make small errors. These small errors are as simple as putting the milk in the cupboard instead of the fridge. Or grabbing the wrong set of car keys as you rush out the front door.
In a busy flight deck, pilots can’t afford to make the wrong selections. The shape of the levers and switches have been purpose built, to avoid confusion. Some switches are created to look like the system they represent, such as the landing gear being a wheel and the flap lever with a flat surface on the top. Others have specific grip or surface type, to differentiate important switches from more routine air conditioning type switches. Some really important switches are guarded with a cover flap.
