Clashes erupted in Pakistan on Wednesday as police tried to repel supporters of former prime minister Imran Khan, who turned up in large numbers in Peshawar, as well as Islamabad, to protest his arrest for a second day.
Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political party called for nationwide protests, presenting yet another blow to the nuclear-armed country struggling with an economic crisis.
"Imran Khan's arrest is illegal and unconstitutional. The protesters will not stop until Imran Khan is released," said Farhad Khan, a supporter of PTI.
The former prime minister was arrested on Tuesday by an anti-graft agency on corruption charges. Government officials alleged that Khan and his wife received land worth millions of dollars as a bribe from a real estate tycoon through a charitable trust. Khan and his aides have denied any wrongdoing.
