Jan Shatabdi Express via Kottayam was introduced in 2011. Initially the train was running between Trivandrum Central and Calicut. In 2013 the train was extended to Kannur. The train is one among the popular commuter trains in Kerala state. This is one of the main trains which connects all the 6 golden cities of Kerala, i.e. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Kochi, Thrissur and Kozhikode.
Jan Shatabdi Express is a more affordable variety of the Shatabdi Express, which has both AC and non-AC accommodation. The word 'Jan' refers to common people.
