With the Karnataka Assembly elections just around the corner, the BJP has announced its list of candidates, causing disappointment and unrest within the party. Former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, a six-time MLA, has reportedly been denied a ticket, despite his long-standing association with the party. However, Shettar has refused to back down and has announced his intention to contest the election, "at any cost."
On Tuesday evening, Shettar held a press conference to express his disappointment at being denied a ticket. He stated that the high command had asked him at the last minute not to contest, and that he had already started campaigning in his constituency. "I am totally disappointed," he said. "I have worked for the party for more than 30 years and have built it. They could have intimated me 2-3 months ago and I would have accepted it. But with a few days before filing the nominations, I have been intimated to not contest."
Shettar's supporters have also expressed their disappointment and anger, with some even threatening to boycott the election if he is not given a ticket. However, the party leadership has remained firm in its decision, stating that they have taken into consideration various factors, including the winnability of candidates.
The BJP, which is seeking to retain power in Karnataka, has faced criticism in the past for sidelining senior leaders in favour of new faces. This move has often resulted in internal conflict and division within the party, and the denial of a ticket to Shettar has only added fuel to the fire.
As the election date approaches, it remains to be seen how the BJP will manage this internal conflict and whether they will reconsider their decision to deny Shettar a ticket. The party is facing a tough challenge from the opposition, with the Congress and the JD(S) joining hands to form a formidable alliance.
