The National Medical Commission (NMC) has expressed apprehension regarding faculty attendance at medical colleges, serving show-cause notices to 100 institutions, including several in Bengaluru. The notices were prompted by faculty members failing to meet the prescribed 75% attendance criteria. These colleges have been given a 15-day window to provide a response to the notices; failure to do so may result in punitive actions. The NMC regulations stipulate that medical colleges must ensure a minimum of 75% attendance for their faculties on total working days. Despite earlier warnings and reminders, certain colleges have not adhered to these regulations, leading to the recent issuance of show-cause notices by the NMC. Faculty shortage remains a persistent challenge for many medical colleges nationwide. In an attempt to address this, some institutions resort to employing guest lecturers, a practice prohibited by NMC rules.
