The Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad is currently in the process of restoring the historic Mark Twain Zephyr train set (and one train car of the Pioneer Zephyr). The Mark Twain Zephyr operated from 1935 to 1958 on various routes of the CB&Q, mainly in Iowa and Missouri...
After passing through seven owners over the course of 60 years (1960-2020) who did not have the time, means, or money to restore it... the Wisconsin Great Northern is finally undertaking and completing the task. Until its completion, we will provide weekly video updates (usually on Sunday afternoons) to show you the progress made in the past week on the MTZ.
On the Sunday, October 24, 2021, we stop off in Canton, Missouri, a town on the original route of the Mark Twain Zephyr. It's here we visit the art studio of Joe Clark, who remembers seeing one of the original runs of the train. Robert Tabern, Director of Passenger Development for the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad, commissioned two 18"x24" oil prints of the train from Clark. We also have an update on the Ray Harvey mural in Hannibal, which was completed this past week. We also continue our retrospective on the passenger cars of the MTZ; this week it is the "Effie Dean"/"Car #500".
