For the first time in 22 years, since the tragic incident of the burning of the Sabarmati Express took place on the fateful morning of the 27th of February 2002, families of the victims and survivors speak up.
For the first time, they recall the tragic incident which consumed over 58 lives, mostly Hindu pilgrims who were returning from their journey to Ayodhya (Faizabad) earlier that month.
Many of them came from lower economic strata of the society and were predominantly Gujarati men, women and children belonging to working-class families. For decades, their stories went unheard of. They were busy going after courts for compensation, while the media conveniently focused on showing its aftermath.
This documentary, produced by Swarajya and directed by our Associate Editor Sharan Setty, focuses on bringing the truth out by engaging with the survivors and bringing their first-hand accounts.
