Community land rights are guaranteed in the new Liberia Constitution. Talking in Helsinki during an occassion organised by the Finnish Refugee Council, Mrs Elizabeth Hoff, the Liberian Deputy Minister of Information reitarated that under the new government, there has been changes unprecedented in the approach to political decision making and governance. The government has instituted structures and procedures that favour civil society advancement, social development, refugee reintegration and environmental protection. One of the key factors to environmental management, poverty alleviation and sustainable development in the rural environmental has been the recognition and constitutional guarantees for the traditional governance systems of land tenure and resource management. This is particularly important in the preservation of cultures, traditions, promoting cultural abd bilogical diversity and safeguarding rural livelihoods in an increasingly globalised world.
