Jackson, Mississippi, is now the fastest shrinking city in America.
The latest census revealed that the city's population has dropped below 150,000, a figure not seen since 1970.
Between 2021 and 2022, Jackson experienced a significant decline of 3,766 residents, solidifying its position as the United States' most rapidly shrinking city.
Interestingly, this unfortunate title was previously held by San Francisco until Jackson encountered a series of ongoing challenges, including one of the highest murder rates in the country.
Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba acknowledged that the city's water system was plagued by long-overdue maintenance and a staff shortage.
Last year, heavy rainfall resulted in flooding, which changed the chemical composition necessary for water treatment. To make matters worse, an aging water treatment plant sustained damage, and the water pressure plummeted to such an extent that residents were unable to perform basic tasks such as bathing, cooking, and even flushing toilets.
This water crisis persisted for several weeks, leaving the population distressed and in need of outside help.
In less than a year following the water crisis, there was a dispute between Mayor Lumumba and city council members regarding a garbage collection contract.
