The legend of the "Butterfly Lovers" dates back to Chinese antiquity, and is often coined as the "Romeo and Juliet" of Chinese folktales.
The tragedy is set in the Eastern Jin dynasty (265–420 AD), and tells the story of a pair of lovers, Liang Shanbo (梁山伯) and Zhu Yingtai (祝英台)
According to legend, Zhu was a rebellious young girl, who persuaded her father to allow her to attend school disguised as a boy, as women were forbidden from taking up formal education. At school, Zhu befriends a fellow classmate, Liang, and the two became inseparable. Eventually, Zhu fell in love with her friend, while Liang still had no idea his buddy was a girl in disguise.
When the school term ended, Zhu convinced Liang to visit her at her residence where she would introduce him to her "sister", believing this was the only way she could reveal her true identity to him.
Liang agrees, and months later, upon discovering Zhu's real self, returned her affections, and the two vowed to stay together as lovers.
Their romance was short-lived, however, as Zhu's wealthy family had already planned an arranged marriage for her. Liang had no choice but to leave his lover, and eventually dies from depression.
On the day of her wedding, Zhu passed by Liang's grave. With a gale of wind and a clap of thunder, the grave opened up, and overwhelmed with grief, she jumped in to join Liang in the afterlife. Their spirits emerged from the grave in the form of two butterflies, and flew away together.
