Teresa Valente Pereira, cello
Teresa Valente Pereira was born in Lisbon. She initially studied cello with Alberto Campos and Maria José Falcão, before joining Paulo Gaio Lima's class and graduating as an orchestral musician. With the aid of support from several institutions including the Gulbenkian Foundation, the Carolina Foundation and the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD), she perfected her skills under Natalia Shakovskaya at the Queen Sophia Higher Music School in Madrid, where she received the Best Cello Student award in 2003 and studied in Rainer Schmidt's chamber music class. She also received advice from Christoph Richter at the Folkwang Hochschule, in Germany, and encounters with fellow-musicians Walter Levin, Ferenc Rados, Xavier Gagnepain and Emmanuel Hieaux helped shape her musical personality. She has received numerous accolades in the course of her career, including awards at the Estoril and Júlio Cardona International Competitions, the Portuguese Young Musicians Award, the Portuguese Ministry of Culture's Ribeiro da Fonte Best Newcomer award, and Critics' Choice and Palau de la Musica awards. She is regularly invited to perform as a soloist with orchestras such as the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, the Queen Sophia Music School Orchestra, and cultivates her passion for chamber music by playing in the Albeniz and Valente Quartets. She made the first ever recording of Armando José Fernandes' Sonata, with pianist Bruno Belthoise, and regularly plays for the radio stations RDP-Antena 2 (Portugal) and RNE Clasica (Spain). Teresa Valente Pereira combines intense artistic activity as a founder member of the Pangea Trio with playing first solo cello in the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra.
