We follow and support many animal rescues and Andy wanted to make the “Take Me Home” video about animal rescue.
This video is based on my son, Brandon, finding a litter of kittens when they began to fall out from the underneath of his house. Andy and I were at the movies at the time, and came out of the theater to dozens of desperate text messages asking us to bring home some kitten formula and bottles - ASAP! First one kitten fell out, then two, then my dad helped pull out two more before they fell. FOUR little tabby kittens! They were about 2 weeks old. Eyes just opening. No mama cat to be found. Brandon fed them that night. Hours later, when they finally quieted down, he heard a faint cry outside. Baby number five fell down. He brought him over in the middle of the night. “Look Mom, another one!” Poor little thing had been out there all alone for hours. Brandon had a hectic work schedule. One night of FIVE screaming babies, proved to be more than he could deal with, so we took over caring for these little guys. Next-door, my dad had the most space at his place, so we set up an area there for the babies.
I put out an online plea for experienced bottle feeders, and got no replies… a rescuer friend shared my post, but no one stepped up. I was terrified I wouldn’t be able to help these babies thrive. But by the time I’d fed them once or twice, I was their Mom, and no one was going to take my kids from me! My dad gets credit for the middle of the night feedings since he wakes up at 2am… Andy was juggling babies as I fed them and drying them when I bathed them. We were a real team!
That last little baby definitely had me wrapped around his little paw from the start. He was different from his tabby siblings… a little blue and white tuxedo. We had to keep him. We named him “Joker” after the movie we were seeing when they were found. We also decided to keep Joker’s sister, Abby. We bottle fed these guys until they were about 6 weeks old, then started mixing milk into cat food, and litter trained them.
I didn’t want to give their siblings away to just anyone. None of our friends needed a kitten. A rescue was recommended to us - one that would adopt them out with specific care contracts and assure they would get good homes! We decided that 7 weeks would be a good age because people typically want babies and the longer we wait, the less chance they have of being adopted. It was definitely hard to say goodbye to Abby and Joker’s three brothers, my dad kissed them all and cried when we took them to the rescue, and yes, we nearly caved and kept a third kitten on the way there! The three brothers were placed into a foster home and adopted right away.
