Back in the year 2000, while we were all celebrating the Olympics and the fact that our computers didn’t cause an apocalypse, Ford let it be known that it was going to be officially bring a small volume of F250s into Australia. They’d all be right-hand drive converted and fully ADR approved, and there’d be a choice of a 4.2L diesel, a 5.4L petrol V8 and (just in case they weren’t enough), every 4WDer’s dream – a stonking turbo-diesel V8. One with 7.3L of displacement, and a thumping 680Nm of torque from day dot. Yep, you read that right.
So 4WDers across the country stopped dreaming of recapturing their youth by buying an old 40 Series or a Series Landy, and started dreaming of an early mid-life crisis that only had a certain F-truck shaped solution. Having spent time in these utes from new, they were quite literally in a class of their own when it came to towing (the ultimate tow-rig) and 4WDing (not surprisingly awkward on regular-sized tracks).
One bloke who fell in love with the big Effies from the beginning was Brissy based plant operator Jamie Dean. When Jamie’s not behind the controls of earthmoving rigs, he’s moving earth of a different kind at the wheel of this stunning 2002 F250. Surprisingly though, considering the big ute sold for close to $80,000 (and that’s Aussie dollarydoos) locally when new, the big Effie looked decidedly worse for wear. After doing the typical Cruiser, Patrol, HiLux thing, Jamie was certain an F250 was the rig for him, so he parted ways with $30,000 and drove himself home the maroon dual-cab Powerstroke auto.
With places like the Glasshouse Mountains at his back door, Jamie’s no stranger to tough 4WDing. Given that the F-truck is 340mm wider than a trayback Cruiser of the same vintage, more than 1.1m longer and 1.1t heavier, that’s no small feat either. What a beast.
