Press Release: Anti-racist groups give Teesside University 48 Hours to Reinstate Students, and Communicate this development to the Home Office.

We have heard credible evidence of West African students being subjected to bullying, victimisation, Afriphobia Racism and intimidation. Consequently, a group of Anti-racists are giving Teesside University 48 Hours to put things right. We are demanding immediate justice for the family of the International Students whomhave been a victim of mass unlawful withdrawal of visa sponsorship by dishonest and unprofessional international advisors and finance team under the watch of the Executive Leadership Team, Teesside University.
From our initial assessment, it has revealed that Teesside University is weaponizing their visa sponsorship rights, abuse their power, and prejudiced against against vulnerable students and their families, including children and young people.
The BBC article published this morning 22 May 2024 titled "Crisis - hit university students ordered to leave UK" says the University spokesman said "failure to pay was a breach of visa sponsorship requirements, and that it had "no choice" but to alert the Home Office. The Home Office said visa sponsorship decisions rested with the institution".
We also note, the University spokeperson added it was "aware of the challenging financial situation faced by some students" and had "actively offered bespoke payment plans where requested". What dates was this commission, and how has this been communicated with the students?
It is a matter of concern that we note in the Home Office letter to some of the students stated as Teesside University notified us that sponsorship was withdrawn because you were no longer studying with them, you have stopped studying with Teesside University. Is this a Statement of Truth?
As part of the Nigerian government's contribution to the Commonwealth Equality Network, we hope the Nigerian High Commission in London can do more making sure their citizens' voices are heard, making sure trade union and civil society voices are heard.
There is aggravated hate crime, financial exploitation and mass unlawful withdrawal of students and abuse of power at Teesside University. Such barbaric human rights abuses must be vigorously denounced. This is an appalling situation for minorities in Teesside, and is part of a pattern we are seeing, unfortunately, across the UK Universities. This is devastating and has caused injury to many lives. We hope the management leadership team at Teesside University will understand what enormous damage has been done to Teesside University's reputation in the world.
We are appalled at such a situation as this, this is unacceptable regression of freedom and personal rights.
As a Community organisation, and taking into account that the United Kingdom is a member of Commonwealth nations, we believe Teesside University would agree and understand that it is only through having a good, friendly relationship, the citizens of both countries can all thrive together.
It is the time Teesside University and the Executive Leadership Team pay damages and apologise to the entire Black African Community for all the inhumane treatment and blatant breach of the human rights of the International students and their families! Riding roughshod over the rights of an International Student because they are unfamiliar with the system is unacceptable. Enough is Enough!
