The Indian Giant Squirrel or Malabar Giant Squirrel is a large multi-colored tree squirrel species endemic to India. They grow up to 50cm in body size and have a 50cm tail. This video was taken just as we climbed up the 2400 steps up to Tirumala from Srivari Mettu. I have seen this species of squirrel only in Tirupati but they are found along the Eastern and Western Ghats and also in Madhya Pradesh.
I came across a video done by BBC Earth about the squirrel and how Macaques steal the Jackfruits from them. I thought of this video when I saw the squirrel on the jackfruit tree.

Here in Southern India, Jackfruit season comes right after the monsoon season. Jackfruits are the largest tree fruits in the world weighing up to 10 kilos. They remain completely inedible until they ripen.
Some species of monkeys find it hard to tell which Jackfruit to eat. Malabar Squirrels, on the other hand, have a keen sense of smell tuned into the ripest fruit. The monkeys use this to their advantage by stealing the fruit from the squirrels.
