Hot Lap Racing is a rather interesting game. It's proudly a simcade title, like the old ToCA Race Driver games, but also contains a unique mix of vehicles (everything from road cars to BTCC, DTM and sports cars) and real-life drivers (Jacques Villeneuve, Tom Coronel and Jean-Louis Schlesser to name but three), along with some lookalike cars and some made-up drivers.

The F1 cars in this game are probably the most unique in any racing game, as they focus on the mid-to-back of field teams from the early 1990s (for the most recent cars in the game), along with a Formula X-Treme, supposedly what a 2030's F1/IndyCar might look like (but with cues that seem very current!).

The developers have paired a unique line up of cars with some unique and rarely seen circuits from across the world, along with a few fictional tracks. These include more well-known locations like Paul Ricard, Magny-Cours, Zolder, Oschersleben, Jarama and Salzburgring, along with real-life-yet-rarely-seen tracks like the impressive Kuwait Motor Town (if you like desert tracks!), Navarra and a selection of smaller karting venues. I looked up some of the tracks and discovered more about them, like Circuit du Var in France, which actually does use the Comic Sans font on it's bridge :-D

1. Race Start (Monza): 0:00 This is the Mygale test track, aka Magny-Cours. It features a number of variations to keep things fresh. I'm driving the 1991 Brabham BT60 F1 car.

2. Spray Effects (Silverstone): 0:31 Circuit de France, aka Paul Ricard. There's no rain in this game, and here I'm in the AGS JH25B from 1992.

3. Tunnel & View (Monaco): 0:56 This is the fictional French Riviera track, and I'm in the Minardi M191 from 1991.

4. Wet Track (Spa-Francorchamps): 1:19 The fictional National Park Racetrack, set in Malaysia, is a short but curvy track. As mentioned, there's no rain in this game. I'm in the Formula X-Treme fictional car, a mix of F1 and IndyCar concepts (aeroscreen, for example)

5. Pitstop (Interlagos): 1:45 Here's the Formula X-Treme at the Kuwait Motor Town track. There's no car damage, so the pit lanes are all off-limits. I'm not sure why, they could have added some damage and pitstops, as ToCA Race Driver had that.

6. Huge Crash (Montreal): 2:18 Here's Oschersleben and some typical first-corner chaos :-) the car here is called a BR 200 and is essentially the BAR from F1 car from the year 2000. This one comes with several colour schemes based on both BAR and rival teams like Arrows, Jordan, Jaguar and here, Benetton.
