This Vlog series is all about mine and Charlies adventure cycling the length of the UK! The trip took us 2 weeks and is probably my biggest challenge to date!
Day 9:
Cycle Whitchurch to Chepstow
How it started:
One weekend I went to Charlies house for a night out (we had met whilst studying Physiotherapy at Coventry University and lived together in our third year). So Charlie had just brought a new road bike and I had to have a little whip on it! After a spin around the block I was set on buying one and we had talks about how we could do an endurance cycle challenge. At first we were thinking maybe we could cycle from London to Pete the scouses house in Liverpool and it soon escalated to talks of attempting JOGLE (John O Groats to Land's End)! The North east of Scotland to the South West of England + 1000 miles! And no this route is not all "downhill", its actually renowned for being the more difficult way to do it as for the most part you have a strong head wind!
Myself nor Charlie are huge cycling geeks, and I had owned my bike for around a year. To make things more complicated I had surgery on my knee in April 2017, Osteochondritis Dissecans, which basically means I had a floating bit of bone within my knee joint which caused a lot of clicking and locking which had to be taken out. This interfered with training somewhat!
In terms of route planning, we had a look online at a few routes and chose a number of cities/towns/villages to aim for each night which roughly took us closer to our end destination! We booked all of our accommodation last minute on the day as we never knew what progress we would make and did not want to waste any time/money pre booking rooms. We mainly stayed in hostels and B&B's and the rare hotel. To navigate the route we used google maps on our phones. It worked surprisingly well with only the minor hiccup. To save battery we would only have one of our phones switched on at a time with the route loaded up on maps, then put on flight mode to preserve battery (it still keeps the route up and gives directions). I also had a power pack for if we needed to charge our phones on the go!
We did this cycle completely independently with no support vehicle, carrying all of our own food/drink/clothes/equipment.
All footage was filmed on GoPro HERO 5 and GoPro HERO 4 Silver by either myself or Charlie.

In all the trip cost us around £1000 - £1200 and we could have spent more and we could have spent less.
So could a couple of ordinary boys take on and defeat this monster challenge??? Of course we bloody could!
With the potential for so many things to go tits up, its surprising how smooth the trip actually went!
