His father was Ramamurthy and mother Thirukkammal. His birth name is Munusamy. Six children were born with him, of which Senthil was the third.

He studied up to the fifth standard and ran away from his hometown at the age of 13 because of his father's scolding. First he got a job at an oil refinery. Later he worked in a liquor store. Later he developed his acting skills by joining drama. This helped him enter the film industry. Senthil made his debut in cinema in 1979 with a small role in the movie "Oru Kovil Iru Deepangal".

After that he acted in small roles in many films. But his official appearance was in the 1980 Malayalam movie Itdikara Pakki. Prem Naseer played the lead role. Next, she made her debut with Kaundamani in the comedy Vaidegi, a comedy film by Senthil.

A few years after Senthil ran away from home, his parents asked him to come back to his hometown after knowing the hardship he was going through.

However, Senthil did not return to his hometown and stayed in Chennai. After that, he went to meet his parents again after 14 years and was welcomed warmly. He married Kalachelvi in 1984 and has two sons, Manikanda Prabhu and Hemachandra Prabhu. It is noteworthy that Manikanda Prabhu is a doctor and his wife Janani is also a dentist.
