Our next book we are covering is "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell. This book is all about how small things can make a huge difference and how ideas can spread much in the same way as a virus.
Introduction:
- Hush Puppies were a brand of brushed-suede shoes in America that was struggling in sales in early 1995 (down to 30000 pairs sold per year)
- The company who made them, Wolverine, was considering phasing them out
- A stylist from New York informed the executives at Wolverine that Hush Puppies were becoming popular
- By fall of 1995, many stylists were calling about getting Hush Puppies. The company would go on to sell 430000 pairs that year and then 4 times that the following year
- The shoes passed a certain popularity point and it tips
- Crime in East New York and Brownsville is huge problem in 1992, within 5 years the crime rate suddenly dropped by 64.3%
- Hush Puppies and crime in new york are both examples of “contagions”
- The change happened suddenly, traditional explanations were not sufficient since they described reasons that would incite gradual change
- These events relate very much to what we would usually call epidemics
- Yawning is an example of an epidemic
Epidemics must be contagious
- Little changes make big differences
- If you folded a piece of paper 50 times it would stretch from the earth to the sun
- The tipping point is sometimes called the critical mass
-In some neighbourhoods, white people would begin to move out en masse once the amount of black residents reached a certain point, say 20%
- The tipping point is seen in the adoption of fax machines and cellphones
- What can we learn from an outbreak of syphilis in Baltimore, children’s shows like Blue Clues and Sesame Street, and a tech startup in Delaware
