'Zahawi Tax Storm: What Did Sunak Know When He Appointed Him?'
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak insists he acted decisively when publicly sacking Nadhim Zahawi after it was found he’d breached the ministerial code several times over nearly two years.
But Labour says there are still "serious questions" to be answered regarding when the PM found out HMRC was investigating Zahawi. They suggest he knew about the fromer Chancellor’s tax affairs when he appointed him to his cabinet.
After Sunak launched n investigation into Zahawi, it took less than a week to find that he’d broken the ministerial code, but Zahawi’s allies have raised concerns about how the investigation was carried out.
This all comes against the backdrop of already-waning public trust in UK politics. One poll, published by Ipsos in November 2022, found that just 12% of people have faith in politicians to tell the truth.
Zahawi’s has lost the trust of many his constituents in Stratford-Upon-Avon, who are relieved that he was removed from his post, some even suggesting he should step aside as their MP.
