STORYLINE:
Construction of the platform where US President-elect Barack Obama will be sworn into office next year, was well underway at Capitol Hill on Thursday.
Obama will become the 44th President of the United States at the official Inauguration Day ceremony, set for January 20th, 2009.
The platform where Obama will take the oath of office is expected to hold more than 16-hundred people - including the Obama family, Vice President-elect Joe Biden and his family, members of Congress as well outgoing US President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
With just 47 days to go before the ceremony, Obama's inaugural committee said on Thursday that the entire length of the National Mall will be open to the public during the inauguration ceremony.
The announcement, marking a change from tradition, came from the committee that has pledged to make Obama's inauguration the most open and accessible in history.
People who can't get one of the 240-thousand tickets to the swearing in ceremony can instead fill the mall.
The National Mall is an open-area national park in downtown Washington that stretches from the steps of the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial.
In the past, parts of the mall have been closed off as a parade staging area.
The Park Service says it's expecting at least 1 (m) million people for the inaugural and the city has put the number as high as 5 (m) million people.
