Riau Province is one of the fastest growing regions in Indonesia in terms of economy, population and tourism. Riau Province occupies the central part of the eastern region on Sumatra Island, which stretches between the Straits of Malacca, the South China Sea, and the Berhala Strait. This province is a strategic area because it directly faces the Malacca Strait and Singapore, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.

Riau is one of the richest provinces in Indonesia. The province is rich in natural resources, especially oil and natural gas, rubber and palm oil. The province is heavily forested; logging is the main industry in the province.

Geographically, Riau Province is located at 445 'North Altitude to 115' South Longitude or 10003 'to 10919' Greenwich and 650 'to 145' West Longitude Jakarta, with natural boundaries as follows:
North side: North Sumatra Province, Malacca Strait
South side: Jambi Province
West Side: West Sumatra Province
East side: Riau Islands
