The Stabat Mater is a 13th-century Catholic hymn, written by the Franciscan friar Jacopone da Todi, and it meditates on the sorrow of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as she witnesses His crucifixion. The hymn’s title, Stabat Mater, translates to "The mother was standing" (referring to Mary standing at the foot of the cross). Over time, it has been set to music by many composers, including Gregorian chant, and it has become an important piece in Christian liturgical traditions.
