CAPTION: Marathon swimmer Diana Nyad ended her second bid to swim from Cuba to the Florida Keys about halfway through her journey early Tuesday. (August 9)
MARATHON SWIMMER DIANA NYAD HAS ENDED HER SECOND BID TO SWIM FROM CUBA TO THE FLORIDA KEYS.
THE DECISION CAME 29 HOURS AFTER HER SWIM BEGAN ACCORDING TO NYAD''S TWITTER FEED.
ELAINE LAFFERTY, WHO IS A MEMBER OF NYAD''S BOAT TEAM, POSTED: "REALIZING THE CONDITIONS OF FIVE TO TEN KNOTS AND LESS THAN IDEAL CURRENTS, DIANA HERSELF DECIDED TO END THE SWIM."
LAFFERTY ADDED, "THE COMBINATION OF FACTORS WAS TOO MUCH TO SAFELY CONTINUE."
NYAD WAS TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH AT 61 YEARS OLD WHAT SHE FAILED TO DO AT 28 IN 1978.
THAT SWIM WAS ALSO CUT SHORT DUE TO ROUGH CONDITIONS.
HAD THE LATEST ATTEMPT BEEN SUCCESSFUL, NYAD WOULD HAVE BROKEN HER OWN RECORD OF 102.5 MILES FOR A CAGELESS, OPEN-SEA SWIM, SET IN 1979 WHEN SHE SWAM FROM THE BAHAMAS TO FLORIDA.
