On 2nd November 2012, Camden council abandoned a public building, fully furnished with desks, chairs, filing cabinets, cupboards, as well as computers and servers containing sensitive private personal data on Camden residents.
A group of community activists moved in and in the space of a few days turned the building into a community centre open to the public and offering free meeting spaces, start-up spaces, music lessons, yoga sessions, bike repair workshops, arts and crafts facilities and free Internet access.
After spending in excess of £5,000 per week on maintaining an empty building for over three years, and refusing to discuss allowing the building to be used by the residents that paid for it, Camden Council squandered more money on initiating legal proceedings against the community organisers.
In the early morning of Saturday 28th November, the Camden Mothership Community Centre was forcibly shut down by bailiffs acting on behalf of Camden Council and the community organisers evicted. The council's actions were condemned local residents, local councillors and two London Mayoral candidates, Sian Berry and George Galloway.
