Because of social norms around gender and work, the work that is available to Indian women is often precarious and exploitative. In this video, we consider two types of such work. The first is home-based work. Home-based workers are typically paid lower than their factory counterparts, their incomes have not increased in years, and they do not receive the social security benefits that other workers receive. The second is paid domestic labour, which is most often done by women from disadvantaged backgrounds. Here too, there is no formal relationship of employer and employee, and no recognition of workplace safety norms. Domestic workers are also dependent on their employers for social protection.
Through these two types of work, we will learn more about women in informal work.
This video is the third lecture from the module on gender inequality and work. To enrol in this course on Decent Work for Women, visit www.nagriklearning.com.
