Abdominal swelling is one of the first symptoms of liver disease most people are likely to notice. Such abdominal swelling is usually caused by fluid accumulating in the belly area, a condition doctors call ascites. Ascites typically occurs when the liver is under stress, and it is usually a sign of liver disease.
Liver failure is a life-threatening medical emergency, but recognizing symptoms like ascites, and getting early treatment may give your liver time to heal.
Abdominal pain and swelling is just one of the warning signs of a failing liver.
Other symptoms may include:
* Swelling in the legs and ankles
* Skin and eyes that appear yellowish (known as jaundice)
* Unusually itchy skin
* Dark-than-normal urine
* Pale stool color
* Chronic, unexplained, or unusual fatigue
* Nausea and/or vomiting
* Tendency to bruise easily
* Loss of appetite or desire to eat favorite foods
While abdominal swelling is common in people with cirrhosis — a chronic liver disease — it can also occur in people with conditions such as heart failure, kidney failure, infections, or cancer.
