Tips for Preparing Your Garden for Winter
Here are some essential tips for preparing your garden for winter to ensure healthy plants and an easier start in spring:
1. Clean Up the Garden Beds
Remove spent plants, weeds, and debris from your beds to prevent pests and diseases from overwintering.
2. Protect Perennials
Cut back perennials to about 2-3 inches above the ground, but leave some that provide visual interest or food for wildlife, such as coneflowers and sedums.
3. Take Care of Tools and Equipment
Clean, sharpen, and oil garden tools before storing them. This prevents rust and ensures they're ready for spring.
Drain hoses and water systems to prevent cracks from freezing water.
4. Compost Garden Waste
Composting old plant material creates valuable organic matter for next season.
Shred leaves and use them in your compost, or add them directly to garden beds to break down over winter.
5. Harvest Late Crops and Plant Cover Crops
Collect the last harvests of cold-hardy vegetables like kale, carrots, and Brussels sprouts.
Sow cover crops, like winter rye or clover, to enrich the soil, reduce erosion, and prevent weeds.
6. Consider Protecting Tender Plants Indoors
Bring potted herbs or tender perennials indoors before the first frost to keep them alive through winter.
7. Plan Ahead for Spring
Take notes on what worked well in your garden this year and what you want to change.
Make a list of supplies you may need for spring to be fully prepared when the time comes.
By investing a little time into winterizing your garden now, you’ll create a strong foundation for the upcoming growing season.
