The technique portrayed in this video is part of a law enforcement and corrections training system. Deadly force should only be used in situations where there is an immediate threat of death and or serious bodily injury. The decision to attempt a disarm is a very high-risk event to the officer and others who may possibly be in harm's way.
There are many variables related to disarming; location, distance, timing, type of weapon, distraction, speed, surprise, and technique. In this case, the suspect moves in at close range putting the pistol toward an unarmed defender's chest. The unarmed defender immediately moves off the centerline of attack, blocks the gun hand from the outside while moving in very close to the attacker. You should always assume the attacker may move or pull the gun back. Spinning in your own space can get you shot. Defender then traps the attacker's arm with an X Trap arm cross technique, forcing the attacker to the ground. More to come later about our X Trap. Defender then grabs the barrel of the pistol forcing it out of the attacker's hand. Defender then creates distance and takes control. If the disarm involved grabbing underneath the slide, you may not need to tap the magazine and rack the slide to make the gun operational. If during the disarm the slide of the pistol has been grabbed or manipulated, then tapping the magazine and racking the slide is recommended.
