About:
In October 1970, the great Ray Charles played six nights at the La Salle Pleyel in Paris. It was a broadcast that pictured him at the top of his powers, reeling off crowd-pleasers like "Georgia On My Mind" and "I've Got a Woman," as well as working in lesser-known pieces like "Yours" (performed here live for the first time) and an incredible, drawn-out rendition of "The Sun Died." There is also a cover of "Yesterday" by the Beatles, with a whole lot of blues and melancholy squeezed into each note.
Ray could sing any song and make it his own. Indeed, in the years preceding this concert he achieved mainstream success the likes of which few black musicians enjoyed. But with that came high royalty fees, and his solution was to get a big band together and hit the road at the beginning of the 60s. Still, the commercial success continued, with “I Don’t Need No Doctor,” “Let’s Go Get Stoned,” “Crying Time” and “Here We Go Again.”
By 1970 he had kicked a stubborn heroin habit and was enjoying his final phase as an active superstar in the charts – the following decade would see the rise of psychedelic rock and R&B, giving him less and less radio play. This concert, therefore, is a glimpse of The Genius at the top as a current pillar of popular music. The crowd must have felt they’d won the golden ticket hearing Ray play, his voice an enduring symbol of the progression of great American music.
