scope of employment – Employee actions that employees are hired to perform, happen during normal work hours or other appropriate times, at the workplace or another authorized location, and with the purpose to serve the employer are within the scope of employment. Minor departures (“detours“) from that purpose still fall within the scope of employment, but major departures (“frolics“) do not. Scope of employment is important for determining if respondeat superior and employer vicarious liability apply.
