(26 Jun 2014) International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde on Thursday participated at an economic forum that Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto hosted at the National Palace in Mexico City.
The first-ever International Forum For Financial Inclusion seeks to increase the number of people who have access to financial services.
Lagarde said providing equal opportunity to banking services was important to close the global gap between the super-rich and the poor.
Also speaking at the forum, the governor of the Bank of Mexico said a more competitive telecommunications industry in Mexico would reduce the cost of financial services.
President Pena Nieto started pushing for telecommunications reform in 2013 aimed at decreasing the power of a few powerful companies that control Mexican phone, Internet and television services.
Representatives from Latin American and Asian countries, the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank were among those who attended Thursday's forum.
