Lightning Network is a popular proposed solution to Bitcoin's debated scalability problem. It is a second-layer off-chain solution which basically allows peers to send each other unlimited small transactions and then just records the start and end state on the actual Bitcoin blockchain. This could raise Bitcoin's throughput to millions of transactions per second, finally allowing it to become the global payment system that many people envision. However, the Lightning Network does have many concerns that need to be addressed before it really takes off - such as routing problem, DDoS attacks, incentives, and more. With many talented dev teams working on LN, the hope is that they can deliver and thus Bitcoin will truly be able to scale!
