Relatively rare, pediatric cancers affect 15,000 children annually in the United States, and sadly, take the lives of 1,500 American children each year. While many parents’ fears will be put to rest with a quick trip to the doctor, there are some signs of cancer that moms and dads should be attuned to, such as a sudden fever that won’t subside, abnormal bleeding or bruising, or an otherwise healthy child who begins limping or refusing to use his/her legs. In this episode of Health Watch, Jason Shohet, MD, PhD, clinical chief of pediatric hematology and oncology, explains which types of cancers are more prevalent in children and their causes.
