STORYLINE
The driver of a tourist bus that collided with a passenger train in Hungary, killing 33 people, ignored warning lights and should have been able to see the approaching train before it reached the crossing, authorities said on Friday.
The German bus driver and 32 mostly elderly German tourists were killed in Thursday's accident while five people - four tourists and a Hungarian tour guide - were injured, some seriously.
The collision occurred at a railroad crossing near the town of Siofok, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) southwest of Budapest. The town is a popular tourist resort on Lake Balaton.
The train, which was partially derailed, dragged one section of the bus for more than 150 metres (yards).
Train traffic on the route affected by the crash was restarted on Friday morning, after about 300 metres (yards) of damaged rails were replaced.
The German Federal Criminal Office sent five experts to Hungary to help Hungarian authorities with the process of identifying the German victims of the bus crash.
On Friday German other German tourists were visiting the site of the crash and continuing to leave flowers in memory of those who died.
One man visiting the scene broke down in tears. He was a German speaker but would not say if he was a relative of one of those killed or simply upset at visiting the site.
The driver of the other tourist bus also visited the site, leaving his own flowers.
The remains of the bus have been taken to a nearby site and were being examined by accident investigators on Friday.
Two friends of the German driver killed in Thursday's crash in Hungary also visited the site on Friday.
Rose Ritter and her son Michael Ritter from Austria had worked with the man in the tourist industry. They were in Hungary and so had travelled to the site of the crash on Friday. They said their friend had been a good driver.
